“Tales to Tell” – a series of anthologies of short stories and illustrations, is an initiative by Kolkata Bloggers and published by BEE Books. It seeks to bring fresh authors and illustrations under one umbrella, and consolidate their unique perspective into one book. Backed by the success of the first book in the series last year, we were back with the launch of the second book – Tales to Tell Romance – exactly a year later.
This time around, we asked authors to send in stories based on a specific theme – Romance. We wanted to take the notion of romance beyond its boy-meets-girl cliché, and the response we got from all parts of the country and even beyond was both qualitatively and quantitatively overwhelming. Stories exploring themes as diverse as the love shared between an elderly couple, the first blossoms of a daring girl-on-girl romance, the love of a dog for its mistress and the tangles of everyday affections made it to the final 25 which would be published in the book.
We also allowed for a 1200-word upper limit this time around, increasing it from the 500 we had stuck to last year. Allowing a little more space for creativity has definitely helped our authors come up with even better tales, incorporate the twists that they wanted, evoke the emotions they aimed for.
After the stories were finalized, we set up finding illustrators who could bring each story to life. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the creative communities in Kolkata for their wonderful response. We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of illustrations that we received. This really did contribute to the book being a unique product in its genre, with 25 illustrations to liven up 25 wonderfully diverse notions of romance.
Hundreds of entries submitted eventually boiled down to 25 stories and subsequently 25 illustrations to those stories. The fifty people who got published in the book are:

The Tales to Tell Romance Launch
Tales to Tell Romance was formally launched on the 11th of September 2016. The book launch event included a discussion on the aspect of romance as a genre in literature as well as how the concept of romance transcends stereotypical notions. Our distinguished panelists for this discussion were Oxford Bookstore Director Ms. Maina Bhagat, Founder of Calcutta Walks Mr. Iftekhar Ahsan, reputed journalist and author Ms. Ramona Sen and Founder of Candid Communication Ms. Paromita Ghosh.
It was wonderful to see an overflowing Oxford Bookstore on the occasion of the launch. Tales to Tell Romance would not be possible without the support and encouragement of book lovers in Calcutta and beyond. It was also such a wonderful moment when the published illustrators and authors were presented their copy of the book by our panelists!
We hope you had as much fun as we did during the launch. Tales to Tell Romance has received overwhelmingly positive reviews thus far, and we hope the book gives you contented pleasure as well.
